We spent many hours over a good number of nights hanging out with this man, Suat, who slept on the streets and was an extraordinarily sensitive and intelligent soul. He talked of living in Germany when he was younger and then coming back to Turkey where he was conscripted into the Turkish military in the early days of the civil war in the mid-eighties, of what he saw and felt and how that affected him, still, to this day. And like so many homeless people in Britain and the United States, there are many who are ex-veterans who have served in conflicts around the world. There was a recent quote that put around 9,000 ex-army personal who are currently homeless in the UK and around 57,849 in the United States, and the statistic that in the US around 22 ex-veterans commit suicide every single day.
